Happy New Year Health Science Students!

I hope everyone had a very fun and restful break! I apologize for not sending out a newsletter last week, but I was just settling back in to the old routine as I'm sure all the rest of you were. There's a few things you might want to read up on in this week's newsletter. As always, there are some educational and fun up-coming events for you to check out. As well, a few of the inter-professional student groups have post-holiday greetings for you. There is some information about a unique opportunity to attend the Montreal World Health Organization Simulation Conference that will be taking place later this year. Also, if global health interests you, Global Health Education Consortium is looking for student board members. Lastly, the HSSA would like to announce the return of the Malpractice Mixer! At the end of this week's newsletter is all the information you need to know about this semester's greatest pubcrawl.

A Message From Health Everywhere

Welcome back everyone! It's a brand new year for Health Everywhere and with 2009 behind us, we can start looking forward to the events of 2010. Highlights of 2009 for Health Everywhere include successful and well attended presentations organized by The Global Health Series and several fundraising events for World AIDS day which brought in almost $900.00. The money raised for World AIDS Day is being donated to AIDS Saskatoon.

While 2009 was a busy year for Health Everywhere, we expect even more from 2010. This year, the Global Health Series will continue with presentations from all over the world. Health Everywhere will also be helping raise awareness about TB for World TB day in March. Health Everywhere is also looking forward to a semester dedicated to exploring collaborative efforts with other student groups interested in international health. Health Everywhere will once again be helping to organize the CHEP gala in March and is looking for volunteers. An Information session will be held on Monday, January 11 at 12:30 in B450 for anyone interested in helping out. For more information you can also contact Health Everywhere representative Sarah Biss at sarah.l.biss@gmail.com.

With so many things going on this semester, there is something for everyone. Everyone is welcome to check out our upcoming events and come join in the action for 2010!

A Message From Aboriginal, Rural, and Remote Health Group

We hope you had an enjoyable holiday season and are ready for an exciting term 2! We could use your help in organizing our term 2 events, so please contact us at arrhg.sk@gmail.com if you are interested in lending a hand in the organization of any the following.

  • In late January or early February we are showing a video followed by a facilitated discussion, the focus is on water and Aboriginal perspectives & experiences. Dr. Lalita Bharadwaj, a toxicologist at the U of S, our mentor Val Arnault-Pelletier, and hopefully an Elder will help to facilitate the discussion.
  • Another upcoming event is a panel discussion with health care workers and patients. It will be exploring each groups experience with the health care system, and discrimination within that system.
  • We have established a mentorship committee that will be responsible for working with the College of Medicine's Student Committee for Representative Admissions in the development of an interprofessional mentorship program. Nursing and Physiotherapy are represented, and we would like to have as many disciplines represented on the committee as possible.
  • A Discovery Days committee has also been established. The U of S Discovery Day in June will allow high school students from rural and Aboriginal backgrounds to come to the U of S and experience what it would be like to be a health science student. The organization of the event will be facilitated by the Canadian Medical Hall of Fame and faculty and staff at the U of S, but we have a great opportunity to give our input into and participate in the events of Discovery Day.
  • The case-based interprofessional (IP) session we had last semester was a success and we are interested in putting something together for this term, but could use some help! Let us know if you can lend a hand in organizing a fun IP event.

Our next meeting will be January 22nd, at 12:30 in room 379 North Wing of Murray building. ARRHG aims to be as inclusive and interprofessional as possible, so please join our group! We will continue the regular twice a month meetings (held on the 1st and 3rd Fri of the month) in February.

A Message from the Pediatric Interest Group

Hello Everyone!

First of all, let me say I hope everyone had a very restful and enjoyable Christmas break! I hope your all ready for all the amazing opportunities that 2010 has in store for you. Speaking of amazing opportunities, the Pediatric Interest Group is looking for someone who is technologically inclined to help us in setting up a website, similar to the Family Medicine Club and SMSS websites. So if you've got skillz then show em' off!
Additionally, for those of you interested in having an active planning role in P.I.G. then please contact myself, Petra Dolman, or our secretary, Linda Xiao, by email at pdd747@mail.usask.ca and lix503@mail.usask.ca respectively. Linda or I will be able to inform you of planning opportunities, executive meeting times as well as positions still available in P.I.G. At present we are looking for a representative for the class of 2013, so if you're interested let us know.
However, we know that some of you are already very busy, but perhaps you would like to stay up to date with the events of the Pediatric Interest Group if this is the case for you please contact Linda Xiao, lix503@mail.usask.ca, about being on our mailing list.
Furthermore, we are calling for everyone's input into our events for this term! So if you have an area of pediatrics you would like to learn more about please let us know, and we will do our very best to bring in a speaker to address your area of interest! All speaker ideas, or other suggestions for events can be sent to me, Petra Dolman, at pdd747@mail.usask.ca.
Tentatively our events for Term 2 include a meeting with our faculty advisor, Dr. Michelle DuRussel, a combined hospital and community pediatrician, who did her residency at the U of S as well as spent 4 months of that residency in Africa working in pediatrics, as well as a meeting with Dean Albritton, whose practiced pediatric infectious diseases from 1976 through 2006 and has practiced general pediatrics since 1994. We also have two events being planned working with other student groups, the first is a event with Health Everywhere regarding Pediatric Global Health Issues, and the second is an event with the Emergency Medicine Club with emergency pediatrician, Dr. Ron Siemens. Once again, if you have any suggestions for events, or you are in another student group, and would like to do a combined event, please do not hesitate to contact me, Petra Dolman, at pdd747@mail.usask.ca.
We would also like to remind you that the 2nd and 4th Saturday shifts of every month at SWITCH are Child Health Days, so if you would like more exposure to pediatric patients, then volunteer at SWITCH! You will not regret it! Remember second years, after you complete one category A shift you are eligible for clinical shifts, once you hand in the appropriate paperwork, please see http://www.switch.usask.ca/ for more details about SWITCH.
We are also looking for organizations, etc that serve a pediatric population and need individuals to fundraise for them. So, if you have any suggestions please contact me, Petra Dolman, at pdd747@mail.usask.ca.
Lastly, the Pediatric Interest Group recognizes how vital the interdiciplianry team is in the care of the pediatric patient, and would love to have members from other disciplines join, so please join the Facebook group (Search Pediatric Interest Group at the U of S College of Medicine to find us), and contact me, Petra Dolman, at pdd747@mail.usask.ca with your ideas for the group or Linda Xiao, lix503@mail.usask.ca to join our mailing list. We look forward to hearing from you!
On behalf of the Pediatric Interest Group Executive, I would like to thank you for taking the time to read this very lengthy announcement, and I hope you all have a wonderful week!

Montreal World Health Organization

Hi Everyone!

I would like to share with you an excellent opportunity to attend a conference that aims to raise political awareness and involvement around issues of global health and promote an inter-professional approach to health issues. The Montreal World Health Organization Simulation (MonWHO) is an annual conference where delegates assume the role of a country's ambassador to the World Health Organization and debate issues pertinent to global health.

MonWHO attracts over 120 students from the fields of healthcare, biological science, social science, law and business from universities all over North America. MonWHO will be taking place from March 5th -7th in Montreal this year. The theme of this year's conference is Pandemic Preparedness. Delegates will have the chance to develop national and international guidelines for the management of pandemics, while addressing crisis situations.

MonWHO provides a variety of learning opportunities for delegates outside of the simulation model. At the conference, delegates attend workshops on issues pertinent to our annual theme, are addressed by experts in the field of global health and learn about the projects and initiatives that peers have been working on at the annual NGO Fair.

I have attached a delegate brochure, which provides further details. For more information and to register please visit the MonWHO website. Registration closes February 1st and space is limited. The early registration discount expires January 1st. Questions can be addressed to the MonWHO Chargé d'affaires, Thomas Funck at thomas.funck@monwho.org.

Yours truly,

Kristen Siemens
Second Year Medical Student
Global Health Advocate, University of Saskatchewan

Malpractice Mixer

It's that time of the year again! The Malpractice Mixer is back and you have yet another opportunity for some crazy inter-professional pubcrawl partying!!

Saturday January 23rd the colleges of law, nursing, physical therapy, vet medicine, kinesiology, pharmacy and nutrition, dentistry, and medicine are invited to the biggest Malpractice Mixer pubcrawl yet! It leaves the Sutherland Bar at 7pm and will head to the Hose and Overdrive then back to the Sutherland. For $10 you get a ticket to the pubcrawl as well as a 'Malpractice Mixer' t-shirt - so get there early to ensure you get a shirt in the size you want!

Theme: This year instead of getting each college to dress in a specific colour, we want everyone wearing the white Malpractice Mixer t-shirt and bringing a marker of their college's colour. During the course of the night everyone is encouraged to write as much (and as obscene) stuff as they can on other people's shirts! Super sweet prizes* will be given out at the end of the night to the people with the most colorful t-shirts!

Colours:
Dent - Purple
Pharm/Nut - Green
Med - Red
PT - Blue
Vet Med - Black
Nursing - Yellow
Kin - Orange
Law - Pink

Tickets will be on sale starting Monday January 18th from your college HSSA reps - limited tickets available! Keep an eye out for further info.

*prizes may be at best mediocre
